Do you want a prettier smile? Do you have cracked or chipped teeth, or are they too far apart? If this describes you, porcelain veneers may be a suitable option. Veneers are pieces of porcelain used to create the look of actual teeth. Considered to be a part of a smile makeover, porcelain veneers can really transform your appearance.
As a Barrington dentist who has been in practice for over three decades, I have a wealth of experience with porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers require little alteration to your actual teeth (just the removal of a thin layer of enamel).
Porcelain veneers are customized for each patient by size, shape and color that works best with the patient’s mouth. Photographs of your teeth and face will be taken, as well as molds of your teeth, to aid in the design process. One of the greatest benefits of veneers is that they don’t stain easily like actual teeth do.
One common question I get from patients is: “Will my teeth be sore after getting veneers put on?” The answer is “no.” You may have some sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days due to a thin layer of tooth enamel being removed to fit the veneers, but after that, you really should feel no different than before you had the veneers put on.
Oftentimes patients inquire about how long veneers last. This depends on the care taken of them but generally they can last for well over a decade with proper brushing and flossing. Basically, you will treat the veneers like you would your regular teeth. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth at night, you should probably be fitted for a bite guard to prevent your veneers from being damaged.
